On 13th February, 1915, the 1st Honourable Artillery Company battalion of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division left their billets in Locre and moved into the front line at Kemmel where they remained until relieved on 19th February. On 15th February, the day on which Julian Woodhouse was killed, the enemy began shelling the battalion’s positions at 7am and continued to do so intermittently throughout the day, causing a number of casualties and destroying parts of the parapet. At 9pm, the roof of the building behind the lines where the supports were located was blown in.
